Occult lineage
The institutional lineage that supplies the symbolic vocabulary of contemporary SRA cases is well documented. It runs from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (London, 1888) through Aleister Crowley's reorganisation of the Ordo Templi Orientis (1910 onward) into Anton LaVey's Church of Satan (1966) and Michael Aquino's Temple of Set (1975). Each of these orders has its own tradition entry on this site; the historical and doctrinal detail lives there. The lineage matters to this tract because the symbolic vocabulary deployed in documented ritual cases — the inverted pentagram, the unicursal hexagram, the goat-head Baphomet, the specific Egyptian-deity invocations — is drawn from this institutional chain and not from earlier or independent occult sources.
The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn synthesised Hermetic Qabalah, alchemy, the Tarot, astrology, and ceremonial magic into the curriculum that has underpinned almost all subsequent Western magical practice. Its 1937–40 publication by Israel Regardie put its rituals into wide American circulation for the first time, including in the postwar period when several of the figures named below were active. The order itself is not an SRA-producing institution; its successor orders are not uniformly so either; the institutional history matters here because it is the curriculum from which the operational symbolism is drawn.
Aleister Crowley's Thelema and the post-Crowley reorganisation of the Ordo Templi Orientis are the next institutional layer. The OTO's published degree structure includes sexual-magical content at the higher degrees; this is documented in the order's own published material and in the scholarly literature on Western esotericism (Hugh Urban's Magia Sexualis, University of California Press, 2006, is the standard treatment). The Agape Lodge of the OTO in southern California in the 1940s — headed by Jack Parsons, the JPL co-founder — was the principal American body of Crowley's order and the documentary point of contact between the postwar Thelemic current and the emerging American technical and security establishment. None of this implicates the order in SRA per se; the institutional history is what it is and the order has subsequently distanced itself from various downstream interpretations of Crowley's work.
Anton LaVey's Church of Satan (founded San Francisco, 1966) drew on Crowleyan vocabulary while substantively departing from Crowley's theistic and initiatic framework. LaVey's Satanism is explicitly atheistic and symbolic: Satan as figure of carnal selfhood and resistance to conformity, not as a literal supernatural being. The Church of Satan is on the symbolic side of the contemporary Satanic field, not the theistic-and-operational side, and its institutional record contains no documented SRA cases involving the church as an organisation. Its first decade did, however, function as the recruitment pool from which the next institutional step was taken.
Michael Aquino's Temple of Set (founded San Francisco, 1975) is the substantive theistic and operational layer. Aquino resigned from the Church of Satan in protest at LaVey's commercialisation of the priesthood, conducted a working which he described as receiving an "infernal mandate" from the Egyptian god Set, and constituted the Temple to continue what he regarded as the genuine left-hand-path project the Church had abandoned. Setian doctrine treats Set as a real non-natural agent, the principle of isolate consciousness; the Temple's central practice — Xeper, "becoming" — is the deliberate development of the practitioner's individual self into a stable divine identity. Aquino's documented dual career as a serving US Army psychological operations officer (Lieutenant Colonel, retired 1994) and as Magus of Set (1975–1996) is the principal documented case of explicit occult-intelligence integration in US history; the companion tract on the American security state treats his biography in detail.
The lineage matters operationally because the documented Presidio child-abuse investigation (1986–89) named the principal figure of this institutional chain. Aquino was identified by children at the Presidio Army daycare in CID video lineups; he was never charged; the case was administratively closed. The operational dimension of the Setian framework is partially documented in Aquino and Colonel Paul Vallely's 1980 paper From PSYOP to MindWar, which proposed treating the information environment as a continuous strategic battlespace and prefigured what is now discussed as cognitive-domain operations.
