Baphomet
A composite goat-headed figure with human torso and breasts, often depicted with a flame between the horns and a pentagram on the forehead. The image was popularised in Éliphas Lévi’s 1854–56 Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie and has roots in the accusations directed at the Knights Templar during their 14th-century suppression. Modern occult use treats Baphomet variously as a symbol of duality and balance (Lévi), as an emblem of carnal selfhood (LaVey’s Sigil of Baphomet), and as a representation of Pan or the horned god in some witchcraft contexts.
